Elaboration

Appearance: Jonathan is a decently attractive young man with a tall and slender build, dark brown hair and a penchant for well-tailored suits. His most distinctive feature are his rather startling pale blue eyes, which are described as ‘creepy’ just as often as they are ‘attractive’.

Personality: He has a superior sort of attitude. He manages to maintain a polite and professional air, even when he’s talking down to you. Which he will. Often. He often appears bored or distant, but if you manage to get him talking about a subject that interests him, he’ll brighten up with an almost boyish delight.

Underneath, Jonathan is every bit as insecure as he is superior. His interest in the psychology of fear stems from his own apprehensions, and to be honest, he's probably every bit as insane as his patients. He can be exceptionally cruel, and has little regard for anyone who does not strike him as useful or interesting. He has a nearly sadistic desire for control, and a destructive attraction to those able to control him. At the end of the day, Jonathan Crane’s primary subject is himself.

Abilities: Jonathan is exceptionally bright, with an extensive knowledge of psychology, neurology and medicines. While not very strong, he is quite agile with a talent for sneaking off and getting out of the way.

Histories

History: Like many DC characters, Scarecrow has a number of origin stories. The important part is that they all end with Jonathan as a twisted psychiatrist, with a dangerous fascination with fear. His experiments manage to put him on the wrong side of the law, whereupon he takes on the identity of Scarecrow in order to continue his disturbing experiments. The false memories this Jonathan ends up with are an amalgamation and adaption of a number of those various origins.

False memories: Born to a disinterested teenage mother and never knowing his father at all, Jonathan was raised by his strict and religious grandmother. As a child he was bookish and unpopular, his gangly appearance and second-hand clothing earning him the nickname Scarecrow. Subject to constant bullying in school, there was little relief to be found at home where he was mocked for his regular nightmares, chronic bed-wetting and questionable sexuality.

The teasing continued into highschool, although through charging money for writing other students assignments for them, he was beginning to see the power and potential that lay in his intelligence. An ill-thought out romantic confession to a member of the football team resulted in a terrific beating and humiliation so intense Jonathan couldn’t bear to return to school for weeks. When he did come out of hiding, it was to attend a party, to which he brought a handgun, intending to kill his tormentors. Instead, during a private confrontation, the object of his affections was so terrified that he fled into traffic where he was struck and killed by a car. No one was ever aware of Jonathan’s involvement in the incident, and he was left feeling utterly exhilarated, and deeply fascinated by the power of fear and what it could do to the human mind.

With newfound confidence, Jonathan soon graduated and went on to university, where he kept up his innocent and well-behaved appearance, all the while conducting increasingly questionable research on the side. When he couldn’t find anyone else to use as a guinea pig, Jonathan used himself, and soon discovered that despite his fascination with being feared, he also got a perverse pleasure from giving into terror himself. These personal experiments have done a great deal to contribute to the steady unhinging of Jonathan’s mind.

Jonathan is now a doctor at Terraor Asylum, where he has a well-spring of test subjects and interesting minds to play with. While he has not yet emerged as his alter-ego Scarecrow, he is in the final phases of creating the mask to which the name will lend itself.
